After meeting with President George HW Bush, Foreign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher spoke with reporters on the White House driveway about Germany’s role in the Persian Gulf war. The Foreign Minister thanked President Bush and Secretary of State Baker for their support of the unification of Germany. He said Germany had supported the coalition forces' policies in the Persian Gulf from the beginning of the conflict, with financial and equipment aid for the coalition’s armed forces. He stated that a stable Middle East would start with a stability plan engineered by the Middle East states themselves, with the U.S. and the Soviet Union playing a part. Minister Genscher addressed the problems of Germany and Eastern Europe in his meeting with President Bush, and both leaders, he reported, were in agreement that Middle and Eastern European countries needed the financial support of Western countries to support efforts toward internal stability in those countries. close
