Harry Truman and Civil Rights
The book focuses on the thirty-third president as a pioneer in the modern civil rights movement. Professor Gardner analyzed speeches, private correspondence, executive orders regarding federal segregation policies, and Truman’s actions in public and private to illustrate the president’s support of the interests of Black Americans. The author said Truman was the first president to appoint a Black federal justice and the first president to address the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). A question and answer period followed the author’s presentation.
