On Wednesday, February 27, approximately 4 days after initiating the ground campaign by the coalition forces in the Persian Gulf war, President Bush announced a conditional cease-fire by coalition forces in Iraq and Kuwait. The cease-fire would not be formally initiated, however, until Iraq officially and publicly agreed to comply with the United Nations resolutions concerning Kuwait. A meeting was planned for Saturday, March 2nd, for Iraqi and coalition military commanders to meet to work out the details of the cease-fire; the meeting was postponed until Sunday, March 3rd at the request of the Iraqis. The United Nations Security Council met on Saturday, March 2nd, to study the details of the cease-fire agreement between Iraq and coalition forces. Matters discussed by the Security Council included Iraqi reparations and measures necessary to ensure the security of countries in the Middle East in the future. close
