Governor Chiles addressed the Florida state legislature in the annual Florida state of the state address. Gov. Chiles, a former Florida senator, became governor in January after defeating incumbent governor Bob Martinez, who was subsequently named to head the Bush Administration’s Drug Control Plan. Governor Chiles, quoting the Bible and holding up a three legged stool to clarify his remarks, stated his administration’s agenda for the coming year, which included campaign reform and the Florida budget process. The emphasis of his remarks was on the conduct and commitment Florida legislators should have to serve the people of Florida. close
