From the National Steinbeck Center the guests talked about John Steinbeck’s life, his writings, and the times in which he lived. They also responded to audience telephone calls and talked about the political issues that were having an impact on the nation at the time, focusing on his book, The Grapes of Wrath. The book was published in 1938 and tells the story of migrant farm workers in the Salinas Valley, many of whom had left the Dust Bowl states of Oklahoma and Kansas during the Great Depression. Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for The Grapes of Wrath in 1940, the same
year the film version of the book, starring Henry Fonda, was released.
