Alex Beam talked about his new book Gracefully Insane: The Rise and Fall of America’s Premier Mental Hospital, published by Public Affairs. It’s the story of McLean Hospital, located in Belmont, an alternative to the traditional mental hospital. McLean offered its patients tennis courts, unguarded property, a golf course, and room service. Past patients have included James Taylor, Sylvia Plath, and Ray Charles. After the presentation, the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
