Bishops met to talk about proposed guidelines for punishing clergy found to have sexually abused children. Reverend Wilton Gregory, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, opened the conference with words of penance from the Roman Catholic Mass and talked about the need for accountability and reform in the way the church handles such matters. The conference was held in response to recent allegations of past abuses by clergy, cover-ups by the church hierarchy, and a Papal conclave of American Cardinals over the scandal. close
