David Hackworth is the co-author of Steel My Soldiers' Hearts, a memoir of the Vietnam war written with his wife, Eilhys England and published by Rugged Land. It begins with his return to Southeast Asia with orders to take command of the 4th battalion, 39th infantry. He arrived to find a group of poorly trained draftees who had one of the Army’s highest casualty rates. Colonel Hackworth explains how he used the hit-and-run tactics from his 1966 handbook Vietnam Primer to transform the troops into a mobile counter-guerrilla force. A question and answer period followed the talk. close
