Mr. Groom talked about his nonfiction book, A Storm in Flanders: The Ypres Salient, 1914-1918: Tragedy and Triumph on the Western Front, published by Atlantic Monthly Press. In 1914, Germany launched an invasion through neutral Belgium and, according to Mr. Groom, made the Ypres salient (a small, hilly area of Belgium) the centerpiece of World War I. It was in this area that poison gas, tanks, mines, air strikes and trench warfare were either unleashed for the first time or refined to be even deadlier. As an early battleground for Adolf Hitler, Mr. Groom said that this kind of fighting set Hitler on his path of destruction. The book includes journal entries of men who fought on the front lines and photographs of the battle site.
