After receiving the Elie Wiesel Humanitarian Award from Mr. Wiesel in the Oval Office, President Bush spoke to assembled reporters on the meaning of the award to him, and on events in the Persian Gulf. During the presentation of the award, Mr. Wiesel lauded President Bush for his continued friendship with and defense of Israel. Responding to a question from a reporter following the presentation of the award, President Bush said the Secretary of State, James Baker, was “hopeful” for progress towards peace in the Middle East during his tour of Persian Gulf countries. He also said the U.S. was in a stronger position to act as an arbiter of peace in the Middle East. Mr. Bush responded to reporter’s questions. close
