Eberhard Diepgen, mayor of unified Berlin, spoke at a luncheon meeting of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, on the upheavals in society that have occurred in Eastern Europe over the past few years, including the unification of Germany. In his remarks, Mr. Diepgen said German unity would only have occurred during a period when the Soviet Union and the United States were getting along well diplomatically. He discussed the political and social aspects of the unification of Germany, and supported the coalition forces' actions in the Persian Gulf against the aggression of Iraq. He went on to advocate further reforms allowing the liberalization of countries under Soviet domination in Eastern Europe. close
