After taking part in a meeting of congressional leaders of both parties with President Bush, House Speaker Foley and Sen. Warner spoke to reporters outside the White House. President Bush briefed members of Congress on his communications with Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney, British Prime Minister Major, and French President Mitterand. Congressional leaders were also briefed on Secretary of State Baker’s recent tour of Middle Eastern countries. In his remarks to reporters, Rep. Foley said no specific plans had been assembled for peace in the Middle East during Secretary of State Baker’s trip. He also said reports that the U.S.' allies in the coalition forces against Iraq in the Persian Gulf war were attempting to renege on their commitments were untrue. Sen. Warner expressed indignation at the idea that the U.S. might be attempting to profit from participating in the Persian Gulf war by collecting funds from coalition countries over the actual expenditures for the war.
