After a meeting at Camp David, Turkey President Turgut Ozal and U.S. President George H. W. Bush spoke to reporters in the briefing room at the White House on U.S-Turkey relations. In his remarks, President Bush commended Turkey for supporting the coalition forces throughout the Persian Gulf war. Turkey President Ozal, in turn, congratulated President Bush for his leadership in the Persian Gulf war. In response to reporters' questions, President Bush said relations would not be normalized with Iraq until Saddam Hussein and his policies were disavowed by the Iraqi cabinet. He also said reports of rebel fighting inside Iraq were difficult to substantiate, but unrest clearly existing among the Iraqi people against Saddam Hussein’s rule. close
