Author Christopher Finan talked about his biography of one-time presidential candidate Alfred E. Smith, published by Hill and Wang. Mr. Smith was a four-time governor of New York who lost the 1928 presidential election to Herbert Hoover by a landslide. Mr. Finan argued that the loss may have less to do with Hoover’s popularity than the anti-Catholic sentiment in the country. He also explored Smith’s relationship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt who succeeded him as governor. Mr. Finan also explains the reasons behind the break in their friendship after Roosevelt captured the 1932 Democratic presidential nomination by gaining support from the Protestant Southern Democrats who rejected Smith four years earlier. close
