Mr. Williams spoke to reporters at the Pentagon on issues and affairs relating to the Department of Defense. The Department of Defense had been holding daily news briefings during the Persian Gulf war, but had cut back at the end of the war to one or two briefings per week. Mr. Williams announced the return of several U.S. Navy warships from the Persian Gulf, and discussed the Iraqi prisoners of war, who continue to surrender to U.S. troops in Kuwait and Iraq. A total of 63,000 Iraqi soldiers had been taken by coalition forces as prisoners of war during and after the Persian Gulf war. Reading the statistics of the post-war situation, he announced the total amount received by the U.S. so far in the fund to pay for the Persian Gulf war was over $22 billion from several countries, with additional funds still outstanding. Mr. Williams also discussed the current unrest in Iraq between the Iraqi government and rebel forces; the status of rebel forces advances against the government were unclear. close
