Author and Journalist Ed Morales discussed his book Living in Spanglish: The Search for Latino Identity in America, published by St. Martin’s Press. His concept of “spanglish” goes beyond the mixing of the Spanish and English languages. He extends the term to include multicultural and multiracial identity. In the book, Mr. Morales analyzes music, movies and literature to highlight how Latinos have integrated their indigenous cultures with their experiences in the United States. According to Mr. Morales, Latino culture foreshadows the hybrid society that the United States is becoming. He feels it will become increasingly difficult to racially categorize people, therefore providing America the opportunity to move beyond black and white identity politics. A question and answer period followed Mr. Morales' presentation. close
