President George H. W. Bush and former President Ronald Reagan spoke to reporters in the White House Rose Garden on President Reagan’s stance on gun control. Shortly before President Reagan visited the White House, he delivered a speech at George Washington University supporting the Brady bill, a bill mandating a seven day waiting period for the purchase of handguns. His support of the bill was a reversal of the anti-gun control stance of his administration during the 1980s. President Bush said he was “interested” in listening to President Reagan’s views but would not take a stance in favor or against the Brady bill. President Reagan said he did not change his mind on gun control, but he had been against the “ridiculous” things that were proposed on gun control. He denied being against gun control in principle during his presidency. President Reagan also authored an editorial on gun control in the March 29, 1991 issue of The New York Times. close
