President Bush spoke to reporters in the White House during a photo opportunity with Estonian President Ruutel on the death of former Republican party chairman Lee Atwater. President Bush spoke briefly on Lee Atwater’s performance as his campaign manager during the 1988 presidential campaign and as Republican national chairman. He praised Atwater’s apology for the vicious attacks on Michael Dukakis during the 1988 campaign as being “a noble thing.” close
