The question time focused on recent developments with the Community Charge, commonly called the poll tax. The tax replaced the property tax and gave administration of the Community Charge to the local governments. Under this system, the majority of people paid basically the same tax. This month, Major’s administration announced that the Community Tax will be reduced by one-third or more now, and will be abolished in 1993 in favor of a local taxation system based on both personal and property tax. Both the Conservative and Opposition Party expressed opposition to elements of the new proposal. There was no question time on Thursday, as Parliament went on Easter Break until mid-April. close
