Moderated by Christopher Kenneally of the Copyright Clearance Center, the panelists discussed the business of book publishing in America, describing what goes on behind the scenes between authors and the publishing houses that produce their work. Topics included the marketing of authors, large versus small publishing houses, writing book proposals, negotiating contracts, and gaining exposure through magazine writing. In addition, Gerald Colby of the National Writers Union, presented the conclusions of a recently released National Writers Union survey about the relationship between authors and publishers. He talked about the challenges facing authors in an age of growing media conglomeration. The panelists responded to audience members' questions.
