Mr. Hackney discussed his experience after being nominated by President Clinton to head the National Endowment for the Humanities. Professor Hackney reads, and comments on, various sections of his book The Politics of Presidential Appointment: A Memoir of the Culture War , published by New South Books, including one that describes what he went through during the Senate appointment hearings. He also talks about the Wall Street Journal editorials that criticized his support of speech codes at the University of Pennsylvania following an incident on campus where an African-American student was called a “water buffalo.” Following Professor Hackney’s remarks he responded to questions from members of the audience. close
