The battle, which occurred on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest battle in U.S. history with casualties of approximately 23.000 killed, wounded or missing. It also marked the end of General Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North during the Civil War and prompted President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
