Paul Tsongas, a former US Senator from Massachusetts, would officially announce a bid for the 1992 presidential election as a Democratic Party candidate on April 30. He said that the Democratic party needed to change its thinking and actions so that it would be identified with economic issues. Until the Democrats were seen as caring about the economy, no Democratic Party candidate would become president. He said as a liberal Democrat who was “pro-business” and cared about these issues, he would provide a viable alternative to President George H.W. Bush in 1992. Mr. Tsongas discussed his fight with cancer in the mid-1980s and how he had recovered and physically capable of the hectic role of president. close
