Former Lt. Gen. Kelly described how he was preparing to retire when the Persian Gulf war postponed his plans. As a result of his being thrust into the public’s eye, though, he has decided to take on an extensive speaking schedule with his retirement from the military. Ms. Reynolds described the “schizophrenic reaction” she had to the war. In the morning the journalist part of her would kick in and she would turn on the television, and then the human part of her would turn on as she listened to what was happening to the human soldiers and civilians. She said that she had a hard time justifying it as a “just war.” She also said she was appalled at how poorly the media behaved while covering the war. Sen. Warner said the war changed his life by “adding a gray hair or two and a wrinkle.” He was the principal author of the bill in the Senate, later signed into law, which allowed the president to have congressional support when authorizing troop deployment to the Persian Gulf. He describe how the Congress and president worked very closely together through the war. close
