Mr. Wills discussed his upcoming book Negro President, scheduled to be published in November 2003. It is about the role played by slavery in the election and presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was dubbed the “Negro President” because of the extra 14 electoral votes, representing the slave population, which he received from the southern states. Professor Wills talked about the politics behind that election and read a selection on the Louisiana Purchase from his book. Following the talk, he answered questions from members of the audience. close
