French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and members of the National Assembly debated the possible war in Iraq. Prime Minister Raffarin, President Chirac, and their party received bi-partisan support for France’s opposition to the U.S.-backed U.N. Security Council resolution. While some members of the assembly, which included French Communist Party member Alain Bocquet, called for France to veto the resolution if necessary, others made the case that the use of a veto would hurt relations with the U.S. and other European countries. close
