The panelists discussed the transition from communism to democracy in Eastern and Central Europe. Mr. Gershman described the situation as an unfinished revolution. Democratic gains may be more difficult to come by in the immediate future now that the initial gains have been made. He said that dispute the significant gains, the roots of democracy are shallow and the possibility for backslide into an authoritarian situation are very real. Mr. Brzezinski said of the current democratic transformation, “there is not precedent for it. There is no concept and there is no model.” The panelists discussed the actual stages and problematics associated with political and economic change in Eastern and Central Europe. close
