The committee heard testimony on the rising costs of health care, and the government’s role in supporting public health care and health insurance. Mr. Darman said if health care costs continued at their current rate, total spending on health care would equal 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product by the year 2000, and 37 percent of the U.S. G.N.P. by 2030. The total government spending on health care, currently approximately $156 billion for Medicare and Medicaid, would be more than the government spends on Social Security by the year 2000, if current trends continue. He gave no specific legislative proposal to solve the problem. Private business executives testified on the increasing burden of health care costs to their companies. Mr. Williams said health care costs made up 15 percent of total employment costs in the steel industry, which affects the ability of the steel industry to compete with countries with much lower health costs. Mr. Shearer compared the spending of U.S. industry and government with other countries, and determined the U.S. spends a much higher percentage of their G.N.P. on health care than other countries, including countries with comprehensive health care programs. close
