Representative John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania) talked about his book From Vietnam to 9/11: On the Front Lines of National Security, published by Pennsylvania State University Press. He talked about his experiences with military intelligence, beginning with his service as a Marine intelligence officer in 1966 in Vietnam. As a member of congress since 1974, John Murtha has concentrated on defense and intelligence issues. He described his role in the Philippines when he was sent there by President Reagan to observe the election process that led to the end of the Marcos dictatorship. He recalled his visits to Panama, Bosnia, Somalia, and Pakistan during various political crises and also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and Iraq. The congressman took questions from the audience of research lab employees and students after his formal remarks.
