Mr. Alexander, with Govs. Romer and Campbell, spoke to reporters in the White House press briefing room on the education reform proposals introduced by President Bush earlier in the day. Govs. Romer and Campbell are members of the National Governors Association’s Task Force on Education. Mr. Alexander discussed the reform measures advanced by the Bush administration, which he said was not a program but a crusade. Mr. Alexander defended the concept of parental choice of schools for their children, saying that the use of federal money to fund disadvantaged children attending private or parochial schools made sense on the grounds that children have the right to attend the school that serves them the best. close
