Ambassador Schwartz described the current state of apartheid in South Africa and the attempts that are being made to dismantle the system. He discussed the negotiations taking place between Pres. F.W. De Klerk and Nelson Mandela, the Leader of the African National Congress. He said in his opinion there are two crucial premises to South Africa’s recovery: “In my view, freedom is incomplete for the individual if it is to be exercised in poverty.” and “Democracy has a very difficult task of surviving if the people as a whole are impoverished and if none of the reasonable expectations can be met.” Ambassador Schwartz also gave his views on international sanctions against South Africa. close
