Mr. Whitman began the process by convening a meeting in his office at 11:30 in the morning to discuss the major issues to be included in the day’s Pentagon briefing. Later, at 1:15 p.m., Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld went to the office of Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Victoria Clarke for a final preparatory meeting prior to his 1:30 press briefing. Then he walked into the briefing room itself to be joined by General Myers at the podium.
