After attending a meeting between President Bush and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the president of the organization and commissioner of police in New York City, Lee Brown, spoke to reporters in the White House driveway. He said the topics of the meeting included a proposed commission on crime in America, the Brady bill, and legislation banning assault weapons such as semi-automatic rifles. Mr. Brown said the association promoted the Brady bill, which would require a 7 day waiting period for the purchase of handguns, but President Bush gave no indication of whether he would approve the bill if it was approved by Congress. close
