Senators spoke to reporters about the release of previously classified transcripts of closed meetings of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations from 1953 and 1954.

The transcripts revealed the process by which Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) questioned witnesses in closed sessions and subsequently selected witnesses to appear before open committee hearings. They also talked about his preference for witnesses that he believed he could intimidate during the hearings.

Senator McCarthy was censured by the Senate for his conduct in the nationally televised hearings. close
