The committee heard testimony in the first of a series of hearings on the prospects for peace in the post-war Middle East. Witnesses testified on historical and cultural aspects of Middle Eastern culture that would affect negotiations and long-term stability in the region. The hearing was held in a “round table” format, to promote open discussion of the issues rather than cross-examinations of the witnesses. Witnesses testified on the history of countries in the Middle East from colonial occupation to independence movements, oil sales, and U.S. policy concerning the Middle East. The hearing provided educational background for devising policy rather than debate on policy itself. close
