The annual J. Anthony Lukas Book Prizes for narrative nonfiction were presented. The winners then participated in a panel discussion on the effects that writers and their works can have on public policy. The panelists addressed the issue of whether or not, as writers, they are obligated or face certain responsibilities because of the widespread readership of their books.
