Mr. Rice spoke to reporters in the Pentagon to announce the award of the largest contract in military weaponry history to Lockheed Corporation. The Air Force intends to order 650 F-22 warplanes from Lockheed at a total cost of approximately $95 billion to replace the U.S. military’s current fighter plane, the F-15 Eagle. Lockheed Corporation, and its allied companies General Dynamics and Boeing Corporation, vied for the lucrative new contract for almost four years against Northrop Corporation and McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Mr. Williams quoted Secretary of Defense Cheney as saying the aerial tactical fighter program was vital to maintain U.S. air superiority around the globe. Secretary Rice said Lockheed’s prototype “offered better capability with lower cost,” and described the process the Air Force used to make its selection. close
