President George H. W. Bush spoke in the White House to award the Congressional Medal of Honor, posthumously, to Corporal Freddie Stowers, a black soldier in World War I. Members of his immediate family accepted the award. Corporal Stowers was the first black soldier to win the Medal of Honor from World War I. He was awarded the medal for his heroic actions during an assault on a hill in France. President Bush hailed Cprl. Stowers for his bravery and devotion to the freedom of Americans. close
