The committee heard testimony on the crisis in health care facing the United States. Spiralling health care costs threaten U.S. businesses and have significant effects on American consumers, each of whom must work six weeks of each year to pay for their share of the health care costs of America. Health costs are also increasing by ten percent per year, and current predictions indicate health costs will make up 17 percent of the U.S. gross national product by the year 2000. Dr. Sullivan said true health care reform must involve drastic efforts, but current radical proposals of reform fail to meet the health care needs of Americans. He advocated building a new health care reform program on the strengths of the old system, based on a new means of distributing health care resources. He also called for new ways to make health insurance available to all Americans. close
