An exhibit at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum detailed the organized and systematic burning of books in Nazi Germany. In the interview, Mr. Goodell discussed the book burnings and the exhibit. The Nazis encouraged the burning of books in order to suppress opposing views and “purify” German language and literature, and primarily targeted books by Jews and Marxists. Among the American authors whose books were burned and subsequently banned in Germany were Helen Keller, Jack London, Upton Sinclair, and Ernest Hemingway. close
