At a hearing of the Senate Labor Subcommittee witnesses testified regarding proposed changes to overtime regulations. Supporters of new regulations argued that the old regulations needed to be updated. They also claimed that the new regulations would be simpler, making it easier for employers, employees, and government regulators to determine which workers could qualify for overtime pay. Opponents of the new regulations worried that by reducing the number of workers eligible for overtime pay, the new regulations would encourage employers to force current employees to work more hours, rather than hiring more employees. They also worried that employees who would no longer be eligible for overtime pay under the new rules would be deprived of a significant portion of their income. close
