Mr. Hanson, the author of Mexifornia: A State of Becoming, focused on the creation of “an alternate legal universe” in California in which undocumented Mexican immigrants are allowed to obtain drivers' licenses, for example, and to use false documents for getting jobs. Mr. Perkins talked about the tendency of Mexican immigrants not to assimilate or learn English, creating a permanent lower class. The panelists answered audience members' questions. close
