Author and journalist Brian Robertson talked about his book, Day Care Deception: What the Child Care Establishment Isn’t Telling Us, published by Encounter Books. The book examines the history of government involvement in and funding of childcare and the implications of these actions for the commercial child care industry. Mr. Robertson said that in the years between 1970 and 1995, the proportion of married women, with children under the age of six, who worked rose from 30 percent to 64 percent. He argued that despite studies that suggest commercial child care has a negative effect on the physical, psychological, and behavioral development of children, the wealthy and powerful day care lobby continues to encourage politicians to provide and increase public subsidies. Following his presentation, Mr. Robertson responded to questions from the audience. close
