Author/Professor Elinor Levy talked about her book, The New Killer Diseases: How the Alarming Evolution of Mutant Germs Threatens Us All, published by Crown Publishing Group. She said that since the 1970s, thirty new diseases have arisen, including SARS, West Nile virus, mad cow disease and Ebola. She recounted anecdotes about patients who contracted several of the new contagions, describing how the diseases manifested themselves and the final outcomes. She also addressed the efforts by researchers and medical professionals to identify the new viruses and create vaccines and cures. After her presentation she answered audience members' questions. close
