George Crile talked about his new book, Charlie Wilson’s War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History, published by Atlantic Monthly Press. The author described the story of former U.S. Representative Charlie Wilson (D-TX), who used his position on the Defense Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee to channel funds to Afghan fighters battling the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Mr. Crile said the money provided important supplies and weapons, but, when the funding was stopped, the Afghan resistance was left with very limited resources. After his presentation the author answered audience members' questions. close
