Former Texas governor Ann Richards talked about her new book, I’m Not Slowing Down: Winning My Battle with Osteoporosis, published by Dutton. In 1996 she fell twice, breaking her hand and ankle. A bone density test later revealed that she had osteopenia, the beginning stage of osteoporosis. The book, co-authored by Richard Levine, was written as a way to raise awareness about osteoporosis. Governor Richards, with help from doctors and therapists, discovered that light weightlifting exercises, along with avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine, could greatly slow the effects of osteoporosis. Governor Richards also discussed the current state of Texas politics, the U.S. Congress, and President Bush. After her conversation with Mr. Shea she answered audience members' questions. close
