ACLU lawyers gave their reaction to the federal appeals court decision allowing the October 7 California gubernatorial recall election to proceed. A judge had earlier ruled that the election must be postponed until all California counties were equipped with new electronic voting machines. The attorneys criticized the court’s decision, arguing that the use of punch card voting machines in some counties could disenfranchise voters. However, they announced that they would not appeal the decision due to the proximity of the election date and the need for the election to be held on a date certain. Following prepared remarks, the attorneys responded to questions from reporters. close
