After attending a ceremony outside the White House honoring seven Americans for helping crime victims in their communities, Mayor Richard Daley spoke to reporters in the White House driveway. He lauded President Bush for recognizing Americans who contributed to caring for the victims of violent crime, and praised the seven individuals who made individual efforts for victim treatment programs. Ms. Bass said America needs more social programs in the manner of the shelter for abused women which she runs on the west side of Chicago. She was named one of President Bush’s “daily points of light” for her work supporting the victims of violent crime. Ms. Abarbanel, who works in a rape treatment center in Santa Monica Hospital in Santa Monica, CA, said rape victims are often victimized three times: by the criminal, the system, and the media, who publicize the names of victims of violent crimes. Ms. Abarbanel was another of President Bush’s honorees. close
