French Ambassador to the U.S. Jean-David Levitte spoke about relations between the U.S. and France. He reminded the audience that as president of the U.N. Security Council, he had supported the United States after September 11, 2001 but that there were important differences in perceptions between the U.S. and Europe. Europeans speak of a “fight” against “terrorists” rather than a “war” against “terrorism.” Another difference he expressed was in the concept of sovereignty. He spoke of the euro as the perfect symbol of shared sovereignty, while the United States protects against any intrusion, even from the U.N., which could limit sovereignty. The ambassador spoke of approving the latest U.S. resolution to the United Nations, but offered suggested amendments. Following his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience close
