Stella Suberman discussed her autobiography, When It Was Our War: A Soldier’s Wife on the Home Front, published by Algonquin Books. It is the sequel to her first memoir, The Jew Store. Mrs. Suberman described her experiences as a military wife during World War II. A teenager when America entered World War II, Mrs. Suberman married Jack, her husband of 60 years, one week after he joined the Army Air Corps. Determined to follow her husband, she traveled alone across the country to join Jack at his training camp in California. She told stories of being kicked off trains to make room for soldiers, having her luggage stolen, being arrested for “soliciting” and coping with anti- Semitism while moving from base to base. After her remarks she answered audience members' questions. close
